APOSTOLIC TEACHING METHODOLOGY

  • Present a brief outline of the teaching. Specify if it is an encyclical, apostolic exhortation, council document, synod document or letter. In this outline mention the areas discussed. Mention those areas you are going to cover.
  • Understand and present why the Holy Father is writing at this time. What is the occasion for this teaching? What are the problems the people face today? What questions are posed due to the present situation in the world?
  • What is the "deposit of faith" that forms the basis and foundation?
  • Recognize the continuity in the teachings of the Holy Spirit. It is He that brings to mind all that Jesus taught and did. He does this through the Scriptures, the traditions of the Church and his divine inspirations.
  • If you can figure out the way the apostolic teaching develops or unfolds itself, present it as a sketch, diagram or drawing.
  • How to make this apostolic teaching alive? How do you ‘mission’ this teaching? Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. It is He who will make these teachings alive. He will give you the courage, the insight and the inspirations necessary to put this teaching into practice. In developing an action-plan, be specific, simple and clear. In the teachings often you will find action words or ‘to-do-list.’ Look for action words like, imitate, learn, identify, become, develop, etc.
  • Relate the above action plan to life situations. Adapt the teaching to your group and avoid being vague. Also let people volunteer what according to their own perception they consider of use and what they can do.
  • What are the needs identified? Are these needs pertaining to a particular group or persons? Are these universal needs? Can you identify some or all of these needs in your present situation or within your group?
  • What are the values or opinions questioned? And why?
  • How are the solutions presented?
  • How does this teaching relate to us being disciples of Jesus and Mary?
  • Make a habit to pray these teachings.
  • Work on these teachings regularly. Most of these teachings are difficult to digest if you take large parts or sections at a time. Space these teachings over a few weeks. The best way to study this teaching is in a group. This way you can share what the Holy Spirit teaches you personally and through others.
  • Stick to what is said. Don’t add or water-down anything. Avoid presenting your opinions or considerations, as if they came from the teaching.
